Stay Alert: July 2025 Local Fraud Trends

Published on July 4, 2025

At TEG Federal Credit Union, protecting our members and our community from fraud is always a top priority. As we move through the summer, we want to keep you informed about the latest fraud trends affecting our area. Being aware and prepared can help protect you and your finances.

  1. Check Walkers on the Rise
Fraudsters are actively recruiting “check walkers”, individuals who are paid to enter financial institutions and attempt to cash fraudulent checks. These “walkers” are often recruited online through ads or shady websites and may not even realize they’re committing a crime.
    What you can do:
If you’re approached online with an offer that seems to good to be true, especially one involving banking transactions, walk away. Always verify any job offer before taking action.
  2. Altered and Counterfeit Treasury Checks
We’re seeing an increase in altered U.S. Treasury checks and even completely fictitious checks making the rounds locally. These checks often appear legitimate at first glance but are either altered from a genuine check or completely fabricated.
    What you can do:
If you receive a Treasury check, double-check all security features. If anything seems suspicious or you weren’t expecting the check, contact the issuing agency directly or bring it into your nearest TEG branch.
  3. Fake IDs and Utility Bills Used to Open Accounts
Fraudsters are using fake driver’s licenses and altered utility bills to attempt to open fraudulent accounts. These tactics are part of identity theft schemes that can have long-term consequences for victims.
    What can you do:
Keep your personal information secure and monitor your credit regularly. If you suspect your identity has been compromised, alert us immediately so we can help protect your accounts.
